Whether you are a beginner or an experienced yoga practitioner looking to add challenge and variety to your workouts, adding yoga blocks can really expand your options. Blocks can serve many purposes. Among the benefits are improved balance and stability, added support and an increased range of motion. Here are a few common ways to add blocks to your yoga routine:

Range of motion-

Yoga blocks can be used to increase the range of motion on certain positions by elevating you off the ground. Some examples would be placing a block beneath your foot or leg to elevate you and allow motion beyond parallel to the floor, or to elevate the rear leg in a lunging position.

Stability-

If there are some postures where you can’t quite reach the ground, placing your hand on a yoga block can improve your stability and prevent you from losing your balance. Like the range of motion application, the block becomes an extension of the floor.

Support-

Postures like the crescent moon can benefit from a block placed under the rear knee for support. This is good both if you are struggling to support your weight in this position or if you have knee trouble that is agitated by being directly on the floor.

Yoga is one of the best all around exercises you can do – In addition to strengthen leg and arm muscles, yoga strengthens core and back muscles, which often helps relieve back pain. The non-impact workout yoga provides is easy on joints while helping to build strong bones and improve flexibility. The only question about doing yoga is how to adjust your schedule for yoga.
Another great thing about yoga is it can be done in your spare time, in five or ten minutes intervals, without any special equipment and without any major schedule adjustments. Squeezing in a few minutes of yoga here and there throughout the day is very doable and very beneficial, and at the end of the day, you’ll have 30 minutes to an hour’s worth of yoga under your belt.
As soon you wake up in the morning, do 5-10 minutes of light yoga stretches to get the blood pumping and joints limbered up. During the work day at break time and lunch time, perform a few sets of yoga stretches to relieve stress (both muscular and emotional) and increase energy. Then end your day with more yoga stretches to relax the body and encourage sleep.

The Hundred is one of the most basic Pilates moves, but it’s popular in nearly every Pilates class thanks to it’s effectiveness and that it serves as a warm up for the lungs and abdominal muscles. It’s a great way to start and end a Pilates routine and you’ll see results quickly.

The basic move requires you to lay on the floor with your legs just slightly off the ground. You use your abs to slowly bring your head, shoulders, and spine off of the floor while your legs remain slightly off the ground, but still parallel to the floor. This basic move is repeated at different intervals to create a workout that not only makes you strong, but lean as well.

There are several variations on The Hundred including lowing your legs to make it more challenging for your abs to maintain balance, or legs extended with your head on the ground. The main thing to make sure that you are doing throughout the exercise is to make sure that your abs are doing the work to maintain balance, not your back, neck or legs. Targeting the abs and making sure that they stay engaged throughout the exercise is the way to get the results you are looking for.

Do you spend your days researching and filling out spreadsheets and looking into internet providers and you long to get away from the computer screen? Yoga is a great way to relax and unwind and you don’t have to be intimidated if you’re new to the sport. Here are a few tips for first time yogis:
Pick the Right Studio: Call around to see who offers a truly “beginner” class and who’s really welcoming to new students. You don’t want to be the only newbie in class and the right instructor will make you feel right at home.
Get the Right Gear: You’ll need form fitting yoga pants and sleeveless tops – nothing you’d wear to do cardio. Make sure you’ve got a yoga mat, too, and while you’re at it don’t forget a no-slip carpet pad for your mat as well. Only real yoga students have them.
Start at Home: If you’re too intimidated to actually visit a class, get a yoga video and practice up at home first. There are some great first time tutorials online and in-store and they can prepare you to perform the sport in front of others.

Health channels on TV have regularly scheduled yoga programs, also books and CDs are great tools to learn. However, for a first-timer, attend a class with an instructor you can ask questions. Proper breathing, called pranoyama, is a very important technique and it affects the benefits of yoga.

What will you need in equipment? There are special yoga pants, however if your budget is limited, try loose fitting, non-restricted pants, at first. Be comfortable. You will need a mat, again if you do not have one you could use a blanket to cushion you from the floor.

Yoga is over 5000 years old, an ancient practice that continues to rise in popularity. Approximately 11 million Americans are improving their mind, body, and spirit with this practice.

These days people are more concerned than ever about their health, and many are becoming passionate about health care and fitness. Yoga is a great time tested way to increase one’s fitness level, and decrease stress.

Those who find themselves enthusiastic about the benefits of yoga might want to consider obtaining a certificate or an advanced degree in yoga. training begins with yoga Sopan which can be grasped in a wekk or so, and then moves into Yoga Pravesh which normally takes just over a month, and certification can take several months.

There are a number of certificate programs available as part of online and in person programs. There are also Master’s and doctoral programs which are great ways for those who may already hold degrees in health and fitness related fields such as exercise science, physical therapy, or nursing and want to expand their knowledge and marketability in the workplace. Many of these programs take place in India and require a high level of commitment to the discipline.

Those who are interested in yoga, but not yet well practiced may want to spend time at a yoga retreat learning from experienced masters in the craft. While recognized certificates can often be obtained in a relatively short amount of time, true physical and spiritual mastery can take years, and will likely require quite a but of soul searching and meditation to determine if it is truly the correct choice for you.

Internet Yoga classes have yet to catch on as strongly as yoga DVDs have. Many of these DVDs are available at excellent prices from major online stores like Amazon.com. If you’re interested in trying out yoga to see if it’s the right fit for you, the DVDs listed below are a great place to start. Prices listed below are subject to change.1. Yoga for Beginners 3-DVD Box Set (39.99 list, 20.49 Amazon): This set includes the following three titles:

Yoga for Stress Relief, teaching how to use yoga to overcome obstacles in everyday life

AM/PM Yoga for Beginners, demonstrating how yoga can serve to both wake your body up and prepare it for a night of rest,

Essential Yoga for Inflexible People, for those who think they’ll “never be able to do that”

The routines were filmed at Half-Moon Bay, Antigua, providing a beautiful introduction to a lifelong appreciation of yoga.2. Jillian Michaels: Yoga Meltdown (14.98 list, 9.49 Amazon): The star trainer from The Biggest Loser and Losing It With Jillian turns her eye to yoga in this inexpensive but packed video. She demonstrates two 30-minute workouts, including a warm-up and cool-down for both. This is a great lead-in for frequent exercisers who want to incorporate yoga poses into their workout. However, those expecting a classic yoga demonstration should look elsewhere.3. Shiva Rea: Daily Energy Vinyasa Flow Yoga (19.99 list, 13.99 Amazon): Vinyasa yoga is based on the technique of “connecting postures,” and is the most widely-practiced Western style. Shiva Rea demonstrates seven 20-minute routines (one for each day of the week!) that show you how to incorporate yoga into your daily schedule. The routines are each designed for different goals, whether it’s relaxation or building stamina, so you can choose a workout based on how you’re feeling on that particular day. There are many other yoga videos on the marketthese are just a small sampling. If you find a different one that works for you, great. Never be afraid to try something new, though.

Congratulations. You’ve signed up for a yoga class and made a commitment to improving your physical and emotional health. But what’s appropriate attire? Many people will tell you many different things. Some may suggest hemp clothing because it’s all natural. However, this material is prone to wrinkles during stretching, and may cause itching on some skin types. Nylon should be avoided as well, since it keeps in heat. The best materials are cotton or wick absorbent, and should be preshrunk since it will be washed often. For hot yoga, in which people work out in a room heated to over 100 degrees, less clothing will obviously be better. Women should wear sleeveless tops or bra tops while men should wear sleeveless tees or none at all. In most other yoga situations, fitted tops are preferable so that the instructor can see how the body is moving. For the bottoms, you should find a happy medium between the extremes of bell bottoms and elastic cuffs. You don’t want pants that are too tight, as they’ll store heat and may ride up or down during quick movements. However, also beware of bottoms that are too loose, as they’ll bunch up when lifting the legs. Opt for shorts or Capri sweat pants. As far as hair and accessories go, secure them as best you can. If you have long hair, pull it back into a ponytail. If you must wear eyeglasses, don’t use a tie around your neck as they could slide behind you and get crushed. Avoid any jewelry that could get caught on the mat or your clothing while doing the exercises. With all this in mind, you should be more than prepared for whatever yoga will throw at you. Remember, never push yourself beyond what you can doyour body will proceed at its own pace.

Seals discovered dating back to the Indus Valley Civilization (c. 3300-11700 B.C.E.) show figures in meditative postures, which researchers believe represent the earliest forms of yoga. Archaeologist Gregory Possehl looked at 16 different “yogi glyptics” and deduced that they may represent both human and divine figures. Later, the practices of yoga appeared in the Brahmanas (900-500 B.C.E.), commentaries on the Vedas, Hinduism’s oldest scriptures. However, yoga does not necessarily have to be a religious practice, or even be tied to Hinduism. Similar techniques have also been discussed in Buddhist texts, and were even said to have existed before the Buddha. The term “yoga” first appeared in the Katha Upanishad, describing the act of controlling the senses in order to reach a higher state. Considering the wide adaptability of yoga, what that “higher state” is exactly can differ based on the religious beliefs (or lack thereof) of the yoga practitioner. In its simplest form, it might mean a higher level of healthsee the page “Benefits of Yoga” for more information on how yoga can improve your life.

Mrs. Lasater is a professional yoga instructor with a doctorate in East-West psychology who has been teaching yoga since 1971. In 1974, she cofounded the California Yoga Teachers Association and currently serves as President, and cofounded Yoga Journal in 1975. You don’t need to travel to San Francisco to get a lesson from Lasater, though. You just need to pick up one of her books. The following list represents just a selection of her titles:Relax and Renew: Restful Yoga for Stressful Times (1995): A guide to restorative yoga, aimed at combating the effects of chronic stress. Includes special programs for back pain, insomnia, pregnancy, and other special conditions.Yoga for Pregnancy: What Every Mom-to-Be Needs to Know (2003): A short book specially for expectant mothers that provides ways to stay flexible and healthy for the whole pregnancy, from conception to birth.30 Essential Yoga Poses: For Beginning Students and Their Teachers (2003): Discusses the ancient eightfold path of yoga teaching and how modern practitioners can integrate it into their own lives. The thirty essential poses, know as asana are presented with photographic examples, and a glossary of terms is included.Yoga Abs: Moving From Your Core (2005): As the title suggests, this book focuses on how to get the abs you want through yoga, bringing both aesthetic and healthful benefits.A Year of Living Your Yoga (2006): A collection of yoga food for thoughtor rather, snacks for thought: bite-sized aphorisms for every day of the year. Some are specific yoga exercises while others help you to apply yoga’s principles to your own life.Yogabody (2009): An exploration of how the body is put together and how yoga helps those parts move more precisely.
