In today’s busy world of getting things done quickly, people are pushed to their limits. Finding time to reduce stress and calm down is essential for both mental and physical health. Meditation time is important, but can often be overlooked amidst the hustle and bustle of every day life. Yoga offers a simple yet effective way to get some “me time” and drain away accumulated tension. With a little proper planning and set up anyone can find their oasis of calm.

Yoga is a personal experience. When beginning any Yoga routine, find a place in the home that is clear of obstruction and distraction. Find a room or space that offers enough room to stretch out. Preferably this area will be away from televisions, cell phones, computers and family members. If other people are living in the home don’t be afraid to make it clear that Yoga time is personal and solitary. This means being left alone, if only for a few minutes a few times a week. A little selfishness is not a bad thing. This is especially true considering getting a little stress relief will likely make interactions with family and friends more pleasant for everyone. Tension in the mind and body leads to less patience and understanding when dealing with others.

Purchase a Yoga mat to put on the floor. Mats are relatively cheap and can be found at most department stores. A mat will offer some padding and comfort for muscles and bones. Yoga should not be painful or unpleasant. Have some water on hand as well. Proper hydration is essential. Set aside a small area in the home for storing a mat and any other exercise equipment. Simply scattering things about will get them lost quickly. Also, having a reserved spot makes the routine more important and significant to the individual. Make it a ritual of sorts. This makes it more likely that a routine will develop.

Taking just a few simple step to set up and maintain yoga equipment at home will go a long way toward creating a stress management routine that is simple, cheap and fun.
